Current reason for Medicare entitlement
Comment
This variable indicates how the beneficiary currently qualifies for Medicare. The current reason for entitlement can differ from the original reason that a beneficiary qualified for Medicare (see the OREC variable). CMS obtains this information from the Social Security Administration (SSA) and Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) record systems.
Values
This variable is coded, and will contain one of the following values.

| 0 | Old age and survivor’s insurance (OASI) |
| 1 | Disability insurance benefits (DIB) |
| 2 | End-stage renal disease (ESRD) |
| 3 | Both DIB and ESRD |
